On July 17, 1996, just 13 minutes after taking off from New York’s JFK airport, TWA flight 800 exploded in midair off the coast of Long Island, killing all of the 230 people on board. The Boeing 747 was headed toward Paris carrying a crew of 18 along with 212 passengers. A four-year investigation into the crash was the longest and most expensive in the history of the National Transporation Safety Board.
