The church underwent a major restoration at the turn of the 20th century. It is now an outstanding example of medieval architecture, with a 12th century font and Pictish sculptures. It is also much visited for its lavish 20th century stained glass.

Farnell Parish Church was built in 1806 by James Playfair alongside the remains of the Old Parish Church. It is a striking building with several Gothic Revival architectural details. The church was built with red sandstone ashlar blocks, now heavily weathered in places.
