The patent you're talking about is not an external disc drive. It would use a physical Xbox (that does have a disc drive) on the same LAN as the Series S to do the validation.

It was simply a way to check the disc for the licence that then allowed you to download and start the digital version of the game. But sadly, nothing ever came of it and no official announcement was made.
