The FCI, formerly known as USP Terre Haute, is now a medium security facility. FCI Terre Haute was activated in 1940, and was the first federal penitentiary to be constructed without a wall. The architectural design is a modified “telephone pole” style, with all housing units and other facilities opening into a long central corridor.
