Apr 25, 2006 · Santa Fe's fleet of waycars (cabooses) shrank from hundreds of cars in a dozen classes in the mid-1980's to less than one hundred in only two classes (Ce-8 and Ce-11) at the time of the BNSF merger a decade later.
Santa Fe got a third bay window caboose from TP&W, but never put it into service. It was donated to the city of Blackwell, OK, given the number 999655, and placed behind their Santa Fe Prairie Type.
Between 1966 and 1968, Santa Fe's West Wichita shops upgraded 315 all-steel cabooses for mainline pool service. Previously, cabooses had been assigned to individual crews, and were changed at every crew change point.
They were the last new cabooses purchased by the Santa Fe. Essentially the same as the Ce-8's, the cars roamed the system in various types of service. Only three years after the Ce-11's were constructed, the Santa Fe reached agreements with its labor unions allowing the virtual elimination of cabooses from its trains.
