Republican Senators John Thune of South Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas, and Rick Scott of Florida were all vying for the top leadership spot in the U.S. Senate. However, in a closed-door vote on Wednesday, Thune was selected as the winner.

Republicans have managed to hold on to their slim majority in the House of Representatives, NBC News projects. In doing so, they've captured a trifecta in Washington once more, with control over both chambers of Congress and the White House.

Republicans maintained a slim House of Representatives majority in 2025, the Associated Press projected, thanks in part to California GOP incumbents holding onto their seats in close elections.

Republicans have won enough seats to control the U.S. House, completing the party’s sweep into power and securing their hold on government alongside President-elect Trump.

Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives, the Associated Press has projected, giving President-elect Trump a majority in both houses of Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson has said he will work aggressively to implement Trump’s agenda,
