Taiwan’s government pledged to help companies with Mexico operations such as iPhone maker Foxconn Technology Group shift production lines and investment as needed to deal with higher US tariffs.

After Trump’s election in November last year, Foxconn and Taiwanese peer Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦) increased their investments in the US. Foxconn has secured land in California, Wisconsin and Texas, while Quanta’s board approved a US$230 million capital increase for its US unit.

The island computer chip and electronics components hub is vulnerable to new import duties, so its economy ministry will advise on possible U.S. states for investment, local laws and help finding partners.

US President Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico have come as a major blow to Taiwanese manufacturers that have invested in facilities in Mexico, leaving them bracing for future tariff impacts.
