Photographer Heinz Kluetmeier is perhaps best known for his more than 100 Sports Illustrated cover photos, including an iconic shot of the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' US Olympic hockey upset over the Soviet Union and the 2008 underwater photo that proved Michael Phelps’ seventh gold medal finish.

The photographer offered some of the most defining pictures of sports’ biggest moments in the last half century, including Lynn Swann’s acrobatic catch in Super Bowl X and the US hockey team’s triumph in the Miracle on Ice.

His work for Sports Illustrated included the renowned cover photo of the United States men’s hockey team celebrating their upset win at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Photojournalist Heinz Kluetmeier, whose portfolio includes iconic images of the "Miracle On Ice" and Michael Phelps' "Miracle Finish," has died at the age of 82.

Including his unforgettable "Miracle on Ice" photo, Heinz Kluetmeier took numerous indelible images for Sports Illustrated, all while living in Milwaukee.

That photo landed on the cover of SI on March 3, 1980, the definitive image of the definitive sporting moment for Americans of the 20th century — the United States hockey team’s celebration after its improbable victory over the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Olympics.
