South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared in a Seoul court for his impeachment trial Tuesday, defending his short-lived martial law bid and denying charges that he ordered the military to drag lawmakers away.

The official charges against Yoon were “leading an insurrection and abuse of power”, the Corruption Investigation Office said after a 51-day probe into his December 3 attempt to suspend civilian rule

Yoon is accused of conspiring to undermine South Korea’s constitutional order. Yoon argued that the martial law declaration was not a “failed martial law”, but rather one that “ended a bit sooner” tha
