Monaco ground out a 1-0 home win against Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday, denying the Premier League side the chance to all but book their spot in the round of 16.

Aston Villa miss the chance to all but secure their place in the Champions League knockouts as they were beaten by Monaco at Stade Louis II.

AS Monaco edged out Aston Villa 1-0 at home in the Champions League on Tuesday with an early goal from Wilfried Singo as the Ligue 1 side secured their first victory of the year. Monaco snapped a four-game winless run in all competitions and are amongst the seeded playoff spots in the 36-team Champions League table with 13 points.

Moments later, the hosts scored the only goal of the game. A mistake from Tyrone Mings lead to a corner where Thilo Kehrer headed a powerful shot towards goal and despite Emi Martínez making a fine reaction save, Wilfried Singo headed home from close range.

Aston Villa are facing a potentially pivotal ‘Battle of Britain’ as they bid to secure an automatic place in the Champions League round of 16.
