A decade on from the P1, pictured above, McLaren is preparing to announce a successor to its first hybrid hypercar. The British supercar maker published a teaser video this week (25 September) asking “what makes a ‘1’ car?

McLaren’s next hypercar is expected to feature a bespoke V8 and a lightweight hybrid system. The brand has confirmed the name of its new flagship as W1, a nod to its storied heritage. The highly anticipated successor to the P1 is scheduled to launch on October 6.

The roughly $2 million plug-in hybrid succeeds the iconic McLaren P1 at the top of the brand's Ultimate Series lineup.

Hard as it may be to believe — in part because the automaker continues to find ways to celebrate it — it's been almost nine years since production wrapped on the McLaren P1 hypercar. It certainly doesn't hurt that the P1 is as exotic and thrilling as it was a decade ago,
