Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty50, opened slightly higher on Thursday, supported by gains in index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, RIL, and IT stocks. The positive US inflation data also fueled expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut in December.

Wednesday was another day of fall for benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty as US 10-year bond yields spiked and dollar hit four-month high against a basket of major currencies, ahead of US CPI inflation data later in the day.

In a highly volatile session, the Indian equity indices ended with little change on November 11. At close, the Sensex was up 9.83 points or 0.01 percent at 79,496.15, and the Nifty was down 6.90 points or 0.03 percent at 24,141.30.

After opening in green, the S P BSE Sensex reversed course, dragged down by banking, financial services, and auto stocks. The Nifty50, too, faced a broad-based decline, with nearly all sectoral indices closing in the red except for Nifty Realty.

Sun Pharma, Trent, HCL Tech, Infosys, and ONGC were among the top gainers on the Nifty index. Britannia Industries, HDFC Bank, NTPC, and Tata Motors were among the top losers.

Among sectors, all the sectoral indices ended in the red with auto, bank, capital goods, FMCG, metal, oil & gas, power, telecom, media, pharma down 0.5-2 percent.

Bank stocks HDFC Bank and State Bank of India contributed most to the Sensex fall. NTPC, Tata Motors and Bajaj Finance also contributed to the decline.
