The Eaton Fire destroyed homes in Altadena Calif., a town northeast of Pasadena. The image was captured Jan. 8 by Maxar Technologies' shortwave infrared sensor. This sensor has the ability to see through the dense smoke of an active fire to the ground beneath, as well as locating the flame front and hot spots in the fire, according to Maxar.

Strong winds that sent wildfires ripping through the mountains and foothills around Los Angeles fed a spectacle of smoke, flames and flight. Vivid orange flames lit the sky in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, where firefighters dragged hoses to meet blazes flaring up in brush dried out by persistent drought.

As smoke pours from the intense wildfires currently scorching Los Angeles, air quality has plummeted across the city due to particulate pollution.

Since Tuesday, several wildfires have broken out in the Los Angeles area fueled by strong winds, with the largest being the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire. The two fires combined have burned thousands of acres and destroyed several hundred structures and homes.
