Republicans’ big plan to cut taxes, fund border security and defense spending and fulfill all the key parts of President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda will rely on deep cuts to Medicaid. But Republicans are risking a massive political backlash by cutting a program many of their constituents rely on.

Republicans are weighing billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid, threatening health care coverage for some of the 80 million U.S. adults and children enrolled in the safety net program.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew said the President “understood” his concerns, which are also shared by a number of other Republicans.
