Sergio Alfieri, one of the doctors for Pope Francis, said he is a “fragile” patient given his advanced age and chronic health issues.

“The pope is fine,” Sergio Alfieri, the head surgeon at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, where the pope is being treated, said during the news conference at the hospital. “Is the pope out of danger? No, the pope is not out of danger,” he said, but specified Francis is not in a life-threatening situation.

His doctors said “the pope is fine” and “working,” though they cautioned that he remains in significant danger as he fights a bout of double pneumonia.

The Gemelli medical team head confirmed that the Pope continues to read, work, and sign documents while at the hospital.

While Pope Francis has not yet fully recovered from double pneumonia, Gemelli Hospital doctors said Friday his illness is not life threatening.
