For years, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have railed against the IRS and its cadre of armed agents. Now the administration has big plans for them: It wants the agents to assist with immigration enforcement.

The request marks the Trump administration’s latest effort to devote more federal resources to fulfill his campaign pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.

Although the Internal Revenue Service has the responsibility of collecting taxes, some members of the department could soon have more duties added to their roles. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asked the Department of the Treasury to deputize some law enforcement workers to assist with immigration enforcement in a memo obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security wants to deputize some Internal Revenue Service criminal investigators and other Treasury Department personnel to perform immigration enforcement, according to a DHS document and an agency spokesperson.

In the memo, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to deputize IRS agents to help with immigration enforcement efforts across the country. That work could include auditing employers believed to have hired migrants living in the U.
