Two women who were rescued while swimming off the coast of Newburyport Sunday night remained hospitalized, officials said Monday.

The two swimmers were walking along a sandbar on the northern tip of Plum Island when they were caught in a strong current, Newburyport harbormaster Paul Hogg said Tuesday.
