At the end of the season, Manchester United will decide whether to build a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000, called “the Wembley of the North”, or renovate the current stadium to accommodate 87,000 people. It is likely to take six years and cost more than £2 billion to construct a new stadium on the nearby site.

Manchester United's plan to build a 100,000-seat stadium has taken a big step toward becoming reality, with the vision receiving the green light from the Trafford Council executive.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe controversially suggested that Levelling-Up funds could go towards redeveloping Old Trafford and the surrounding area. The 71-year-old’s stake in United includes £273million for the redevelopment of the stadium, but that money would not come close to covering the kind of renovation he seeks.

Manchester United has welcomed the announcement of Government support for the project to regenerate the area around Old Trafford, with chief executive Omar Berrada describing it as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".
