Oakland voters get to select a new mayor. Residents of District 2 will also get to pick a new City Council representative, and all registered voters will have a say on whether or not to levy a new sales tax — if the City Council decides to add this as an option on the ballot.

In a complex leadership shuffle, Jenkins was elected council president and elevated to mayor, temporarily. Noel Gallo now becomes council president.

Jenkins was born and raised in East Oakland. He is the son of two Oakland Unified School District employees, a graduate of Oakland High School and was first elected to the council in 2022.

Oakland is getting another change of leadership. The City Council voted to elect Kevin Jenkins as the new president, who will then take over as mayor until a special election in April.
