Mackintosh worked as an architect designing buildings between 1895 and 1906. Eventually he gave up design and architecture. He spent the rest of his life between England and the South of France.

The Lighthouse was formerly home to the Glasgow Herald and – from 1999 – Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City. It hosted a permanent Mackintosh exhibition.
