ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Atlanta City Council is one step closer to putting a temporarily ban on encampment sweeps. It follows the tragic death of Cornelius Taylor who was recently killed during an encampment sweep on Jan. 16.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is backing a moratorium on clearing homeless encampments and called for a review of city policy on caring for the unhoused after a man died during an encampment sweep last week.

A 49-year-old homeless man died earlier this month after a homeless camp was being cleared by the city of Atlanta. Witnesses said a city truck crushed him.

It comes in the wake of Cornelius Taylor's death, who was killed on Jan. 16 as City of Atlanta crews attempted to clear a homeless encampment.
