Former head coach Rex Ryan, who hasn’t held a coaching role in any form since 2016, and Ron Rivera, who was fired by the Washington Commanders after 2023, are both reportedly expected to interview for the Jets’ top job as another lost season winds down. This somehow both surprising and not.

But if there's one NFL franchise that knows Rex Ryan, it's New York. Some fans may view it as the Jets relying on nostalgia for a cheap pop. But the Jets genuinely believe Ryan could be the head coach to lead them back to prominence.

Ryan told Jake Asman of ESPN New York radio Monday morning that he expects to speak with the New York Jets about their head coaching vacancy once the regular season concludes. NFL insider Ian Rapoport then confirmed the possibility that the Jets may bring in Ryan for an interview to return as head coach.

Now, Ryan told ESPN New York “that he expects to speak with the Jets for their head coaching opening after the regular season ends,” per Jake Asman. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added “Actually a possibility, believe it or not, as a candidate who could be interviewed.”

Ryan hasn't coached in the NFL since 2016, when he was with the Buffalo Bills. From 2009-2014 Ryan was the Jets head coach, making two AFC Championship appearances in his first two seasons, but finishing with a 46-50 record. He is the last head coach to lead the Jets to the playoffs.

Rex Ryan has not been shy about campaigning for the New York Jets' head coaching job, which he previously held for six seasons from 2009-2014, arguing in November he'd restore the lowly franchise if given a second chance.
