Though it’s hard to estimate where the Northern Lights will show up, they may be the most visible Friday night in Canada and Alaska, according to NOAA (see image below). However, continental U.S. states within the aurora’s view line include Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

In simpler terms, the storm could cause northern lights to be visible in areas across the northern U.S. The outbreak of northern lights comes after a coronal mass ejection launched from the Sun on Saturday is expected to arrive at Earth Monday night.

Charged particles crashing into Earth are expected to create strong solar storm conditions early Monday morning, prompting a Geomagnetic Storm Watch as the Northern Lights could be visible farther south than usual.

If it hits as night falls in the U.S. on Monday, aurora could be visible as far south as Iowa and Pennsylvania. If it arrives earlier, northern Europe could see the display.

Northern lights could be visible over mid-latitudes across the US and Europe tonight, Sept. 16. A geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Vibrant auroras could be visible as far south as Oregon and Pennsylvania tonight as Earth reels from a "strong" G3-class geomagnetic storm. However, the nearly full Harvest Moon may complicate viewing opportunities.

Conditions sparked by the CMEs became so strong Monday night that the SWPC issued a “severe geomagnetic storm alert” around 11 p.m. ET. According to the SWPC, the “major disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field” was expected to reach G4 strength.
