Gov. Ron DeSantis is scheduled to hold a news conference Thursday afternoon as this week's special session on immigration nears an end, with lawmakers on a path to pass a bevy of new reform bills.

Under the previous bill passed by lawmakers, SB 2B, state-level immigration enforcement would have moved solely under Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson. DeSantis called that bill “weak” and said Republican lawmakers were trying to undermine his efforts to crackdown on illegal immigration.

Measures include the creation of an immigration enforcement board and stiffer penalties for undocumented people who commit crimes.
