A schoolteacher from Santa Barbara County who was six months pregnant fell to her death while hiking on the Greek island of Crete late last month, according to multiple reports.

Rescue efforts involved 21 firefighters and emergency responders working tirelessly to reach her in what was described as a highly inaccessible location.

By all accounts, Clara Thomann was the high school teacher you wanted: young, vibrant, outdoorsy, real and, most of all, the kind that could take the difficult-to-parse world of physics and make it fun.
