I had read about the stones at Carnac in travel books and definitely wanted to see while we were in Brittany, but nothing prepared me for seeing literally thousands of giant stones placed in parallel… Full review by bluestocking78

Quite a spiritual place, full of mystery etc. Well worth a visit and walk around - you don't have to pay to visit the museum or the stones. Just pay for a guided tour. A must see in Brittany. Full review by AJEMason

Hello, apologies if this has been asked before and I missed the answer! We will be in the area in August (2020) and would like to see the stones. From what I can surmise things are different during peak tourist season? We have to have a guided tour? If so, where do we book this tour from? I'd prefer an English-language tour but can do a French tour if that's what's available. Is the tour worth it? It seems that you can walk the perimeter for free (from reading some of the posts) - is that still the case in August? We will have our 2 year old son with us if that makes a difference... Thank you in advance for any advice!

Wife does not want to go if this is the case noted in the review below. They have meticulously fenced in every stone during tourist season. They have put up some kind of visitor's center where you can pay to get a guided walk in English like once a week.

It is true you have to pay to walk among the stone. You can see them from the parking lot also (for free). There are guided walking tours about every 20 minutes, I would think they are in English on request. When I was there it was with an Australian group, the guide walking us trough spoke English. There are also two different tourist trains/busses doing a loop of the greater area. I would be very surprised if the taped commentary were not in English.

Hi! We visited in June 2017. The biggest sites are the alignments, and most of these are fenced off during the high season with access only by guided tour. Now, we didn't go to the visitor centre at all, and simply walked around the perimeter footways. Quite honestly you wouldn't be able to see much else if you were standing right in the midst of the stones, so having read up a bit, we didn't think there was any point at all in going on a guided tour (with or without an insulting guide - don't know anything about that sort of thing). There are interpretive info boards here and there too. However, as a tip, get hold of an IGN 1:25000 map of the area (the map no. is 0821OT, you can get it from Stanfords in London). There are loads and loads and loads of prehistoric sites in the area. Some of them are accessible for free if you can find them - some are difficult to locate even with the map. If you really do want to walk amongst the alignments, then try the Alignments du Petit Menec, just off road East of the village of Kerlescan, this is in a lightly forested area on private land (but no one seemed to mind us wandering around - we accessed it from the nearby campsite which we were using). Hope this is useful.

Hi Rosemary! Well, to have a lovely tour around the standing stones I will definitely advise you the tour by train. First because it is exhaustive and you will see the alignments from close range. Then because the explanations are made in English and believe me in a perfectly clear language! Then the people managing these trains are locals and not "strangers" and therefore are welcoming people. In a nutshell, for me the best to safely enjoy a ride in one of the most prestigious and historical place to visit!

Q:
Hello to all. I am visiting with my wife and son the area in August. From the websites and reviews I read, it seems to me that walking among the megaliths is prohibited, whereas walking around them is allowed in designated pathways. Is that right? Is it worth it to have the 1-hour tour guide? would it let us walk among them? My son would LOVE to do that. Also, is it that only via a guided tour you get to walk even around them otherwise you are not allowed to enter the area and juste them from the road? I also came across the petit train that circles the area. Is it worth it? Should we combine it with the tour guide or our independent walk? Finally, where do you have to go to get to see the truly big megaliths? I read there are some in nearby forests but where? I appreciate the feedback in advance.
