Wow! Visited the top of the mountains as part on an organised Eastern island tour. The scenery was absolutely spectacular! We were in the sun and above the clouds which offered breath-taking views al…Full review by Freers

Was absolutely stunning - the views are really great. Just heads-up to check in advance whether the trail is fully open and the current conditions. When we visited, part of the trail was closed, but …Full review by Lia J

The trail is closed to the Pico Ruivo peak so it’s very short but still worth doing. We fretted about how early to go and catching sunrise but I saw a video from someone there and it was pitch black …Full review by eannaboland
We will be in Funchal for one day when our transatlantic cruise comes into port. We are very experienced hikers and have no interest in doing a tour or shore excursion. We're hoping to be able to do the hike independent of a tour, but the obvious concern is making sure we get back to the port by 530pm (we can depart the ship at 8am). My understanding is that it won't be difficult to get a taxi to the parking area. But getting back, from what I've read, isn't as easy. The most common suggestion I've read is to get the contact number of a taxi driver (or taxi stand) and call them when we finish. i'm not inclined to trust this option, as taxis (at least in the US) are terrible, and I'd never put my trust in them. Perhaps the taxi industry is different here? If we can agree on being picked up by a taxi would you trust them? or, maybe there is a better, more reliable option?

My apologies for a late response, just seeing this now. Everyone speaks pretty good English there, speak with the taxi before you get in and ask if the driver would be willing to come back to pick you up and listen to your gut instinct regarding the response. Something to take into consideration is that that hike is not always doable. I witnessed folks getting dropped off, only to start the hike and find out that they could not do it due to high wind gusts/strong rain. You can not fully judge the trail conditions from the parking area. If the mountain looks like there is poor visibility from below I do not recommend that you even try with your time line. If there looks like good visibility, speak to a driver or two and feel them out regarding a return trip. If they can't do it, inquire if they know anyone that can. Good luck!
We're thinking of booking tour transfers to hike from pico do arieiro, to pico ruivo and ends Achada do teixeira. The tour say it should take about 4 and half hrs. But I watch youtube, it say 6 to 7 hrs....is it really 4 and half hrs. I'm just concerned that we don't want the tour transfer wait for us too long.

It took my wife and I about 6 hours there and back. We were probably on the slow side and we did stop and eat for about 20 minutes.
Hi. I read your comment about the hike between pico ruivo and pico do arriero. I would like to ask you where (from which pick) and when should I start the trail to see the sunrise at July, and if its better to see the sunrise in one day and do the hike in another. Or should I do both in the same day? Thanks in advance

Hi - we didn't go for sunrise, so I can't specifically answer that, but would say that you can definitely see the sunrise and do the hike in the same day. It's beautiful! Enjoy!
