Went with the kids and had a fantastic time at Blue John Cavern, learnt a lot from our guide, Nigel, who was great fun and knowledgeable. The cavern is amazing and to learn how the miners work there…Full review by Steven M

Thoroughly enjoyed our tour. The guide was brilliant. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name, but it wasn't Nigel - he made sure we were all OK and safe at all times. He was very knowledgeable and gave…Full review by stix2133

Amazing caves, many steps down into breathtaking caverns. Our guide Nigel was enthusiastic, funny and very informative. Right next door to Mam Tor so you can squeeze that in too!Full review by Ruth S
Hi Thinking of visiting the caverns, are there any other play area or parks near by? It's a long drive just to do this. Will have a 4 year old with us and a dog. Thanks in advance

The Blue John Cavern is a bit remote and, when we were there last Tuesday, the toilets were closed for refurbishment. There's four show-caves in and around the lovely village of Castleton, and Blue John Cavern is the furthest away. There may well be a playground in Castleton (a ten minute drive via the Winnats Pass - fantastic scenery). Forty-five years ago, I took my 4-year-old daughter down the Cavern's 245 steps and back up again, and she thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. I'm well into my 70s now and my mobility isn't what it used to be, which is why I aborted my descent last Tuesday. A large portion of the steps are very steep, winding and slippery. The handrail, that the guide tells you to hold on to at all times, was also wet. I suggest you wear gloves to get a better grip.
Summer opening times 9.30am (first tour 9.45am) Daily Weekday Closing 3.30pm (please arrive by 3.15pm) Monday - Friday Weekend Closing 4.00pm (please arrive by3.45pm) Adults £12.00 Children £6.00 Senior Citizens £9.00 Students £9.00 If you want to pay by credit card you have to pay in the shop next to the entrance to the entrance.
Hi, I would like to visit caverns; however, I do not want any tours, I want to just walk around on my own. I do not want tours, as my spoken English understanding is not great, and to be honest I find tours very boring. I am ready to pay the full price, but want to be just on my own. Is it possible? If not, can you suggest any similar place where this could be possible?
I'm going to the area with three children who love caverns and mines. But which is best?! Really looking for interesting colours and stalactites (to keep teenage daughter happy)

For stalactites and interesting colours Pooles Cavern in Buxton is better than the Castleton caves.
